How Does Curodont Repair Work?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids. They’re everywhere in your body, including your saliva, where they play a natural role in fighting bacteria and supporting tissue repair. Scientists have taken that concept and engineered it for dentistry.
Curodont Repair uses a specific self-assembling peptide, Oligopeptide-104, also known as P11-4. When applied to a tooth with early decay, the peptide penetrates the microscopic pores in weakened enamel and forms a biomatrix, an invisible scaffold that attracts calcium and phosphate ions from your saliva. Those minerals deposit around the scaffold and begin forming new hydroxyapatite crystals. That’s the same mineral that makes up your natural enamel.
Who Is a Candidate for Curodont?
Curodont works best when decay is caught early. Specifically, it targets incipient lesions: areas where enamel has begun to demineralize beneath the surface, but the outer layer remains intact. These often appear as white spots on your teeth. This non-invasive, 5-minute procedure serves as a bridge between preventive dental care and more invasive restorative treatments, helping prevent cavity formation and reducing tooth sensitivity.
Curodont may be ideal for the following:
- Patients with early-stage, non-cavitated caries lesions
- Patients with white spot lesions, particularly after orthodontic treatment
- Patients who prefer a no-drill, conservative option for managing early decay
If decay has progressed into a cavity, a traditional restoration is still needed. Curodont is not a replacement for restorative care. But for early-stage decay, it offers a new, non-invasive treatment option.
What Can You Expect?
Curodont treatment is fast and completely comfortable. We will isolate and clean the affected tooth, then brush the peptide solution directly onto the lesions. The peptide infiltrates the enamel within a few minutes, helping regenerate your tooth enamel from the inside out. Many patients are surprised by how quick and straightforward the treatment is. No anesthesia, no drilling, no recovery. At times, we may recommend pairing your Curodont treatment with fluoride application to further support tooth enamel remineralization.
Coming in regularly for your dental exams and cleanings will allow us to track your treated areas over time and determine whether you would benefit from retreatment.
What Does the Research Say?
Clinical trials published in peer-reviewed journals, including a meta-analysis in the Journal of the American Dental Association (ADA), found that P11-4 products produced significantly better results in stopping early decay than fluoride varnish alone. One randomized controlled trial showed approximately 60% less risk of the progression of decay at six months in the peptide group compared to fluoride varnish alone. Another study found that more than 40% of treated lesions showed total or partial remineralization.
